A CLEANER YOU:
FAITH & HYGIENE
Overview
Abu Hurayrah narrated that he heard Allah’s Messenger ﷺ asking: “If there was a river at the door of anyone amongst you, and he took a bath in it five times a day, would you notice any dirt on him?” They replied: “Not a trace of dirt would be left.” The Prophet ﷺ explained: “That is the example of the five daily prayers. Through those prayers, Allah erases misdeeds.”
– [Sahih Al-Bukhari, Kitab Mawaqit As-Salah]
Having left off the bad habits of the past that have made us unclean, we now look into how we can maintain a high level of cleanliness and hygiene. Purity is a concept that is central to our understanding of faith and servitude towards God. Even when learning Islamic ritual law, we begin learning the rules of worship by learning the importance of physical and spiritual purity. How does hygiene have a significant impact on us, in terms of who we are as a person? Ustaz Taufiq shares how cleanliness and hygiene, are fundamental first steps for us to take in our journey towards self-betterment.
Living in such difficult times, we have all grown to understand the importance of cleanliness and hygiene. However, this pursuit of purity is not only a worldly matter that will benefit us physically, in terms of our health, but rather, being clean is also a manifestation of our faith and God-consciousness. Just as we perform acts of worship to cleanse ourselves of spiritual emptiness, we also pay close attention to physical cleanliness so that we present ourselves to be the best we can be, as servants of God, and servants of humanity.
As this month purifies us of our misdeeds, let’s learn how being a clean Muslim for life, will go a long way in bringing us closer to God.
