ASBAB AN-NUZUL:
IMPORTANCE & RELEVANCE

Overview

“'Aishah narrated that when the last verses of Surah Al-Baqarah were revealed, The Prophet ﷺ recited them in the mosque, and proclaimed the trade of alcohol as illegal.
” (Sahih Al-Bukhari, The Book of Sales)

The revelation of God was staggered over a period of 23 years, within which The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ was tasked with the mission of reforming the theological deviations of his time. This period of revelation is an imperative study for every scholar of The Quran, as it highlights the insights of the environment and its characters, which interacted with God’s revelation as it was being revealed. The textual reading of The Quran, in its mere linguistic essence, would not be sufficient for us to gain a clear understanding of the motives and objectives of The Speech of God. This sparks further interest and an in-depth inquiry into the history of divine revelation, as it is being revealed.

This subject within the sciences of The Quran, is known as, The Reasons of Revelation. Asbab An-Nuzul extends its focus towards what happened when specific verses or chapters of The Quran were being revealed to The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. This contextual understanding of The Quran adds a whole new layer of details and colour, that leads readers to form a wholly distinct perspective of The Words of God, in comparison to what one may perceive from just a literal reading of the text.
