FOOD FOR THOUGHT:
THE BALANCED DINER

Overview

Jabir narrated that Allah’s Messenger ﷺ said:
“Food for one person, suffices two people, and food for two people, suffices four, and food for four, suffices eight.”

– [Sahih Muslim, Kitab Al-Ashribah]

In this blessed month, most, if not all of us, are restraining ourselves from our usual gastronomic routines. This sudden change that we experience yearly is a testament to what change can really do to us. It makes us think again about our life outside of Ramadhan. More so, it should make us think again about how we eat outside of Ramadhan.

Food isn’t only something we have to mundanely consume to survive, but rather, God has made it a blessings for us, that we can discover new types of food, each appealing to different people. It is from the fraction of the pleasures of this world that God has made permissible for us. But, even within that permissibility lies guidelines that help us to get the best diet that will enable us to become truly healthy servants of God, who consume only to exert our energy towards beneficial actions that facilitate self-betterment and contribution to society.

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ is always an exemplar that we look up to, and his ﷺ way of consumption teaches us some principles that we can adopt today, even if many things might have changed over time. One thing is for sure, a healthy, balanced diet has the potential to bring us all closer to God. This blessed month will show us how.

Join Ustaz Fizar Zainal, as he dissects and analyses the importance and benefit of maintaining a healthy and balanced method of eating, and how it helps us to better ourselves as individuals who seek closeness to God, within and outside of Ramadhan.
