Synopsis
“O people, eat from halal and tayyib and do not follow the steps of Satan, truly he is a real enemy for you.”
– [Al-Baqarah: 168]
Al-Miqdām ibn Ma‘di Karib reported: I heard the Messenger of Allah say: “The son of Adam does not fill any vessel worse than his stomach. It is enough for the son of Adam to eat a few mouthfuls to straighten his back, but if he must, then one third for his food, one third for his drink, and one third for his breath.”
– [Ibn Majah]
The correlation between food and wellbeing is undisputed. Abundant guidance and instruction is found in the Quran and the Sunnah. The discussion concerning food does not stop at just the consumption of halal; in fact, it goes beyond that, which is to eat halal food that is good or of high quality.
The sunnah provides much more information including suggested food types, ethics and medical properties of food items. Prophetic medicine or Al-Tibb Al-Nawawi has attracted much attention from Muslim populations. However the practical aspect of this knowledge requires much consideration and understanding.
Another aspect of food that is greatly highlighted in our tradition is the correlation between food and spirituality. In Surah al-Mu’minun’ Allah instructs (Eat from the good foods and work righteousness) which is indicative of the this concept. Being mindful concerning what we eat is integral in the positive development of our body, mind and spirit.
