HADITH EXTRACTION:
INTRODUCTION TO CLASSICAL AND MODERN TAKHRIJ

Overview

Anas ibn Malik said: ``Indeed, what prevents me from narrating to you a great number of Hadith, is that Allah’s Messenger ﷺ said: “Whoever deliberates to lie upon me, then, let him take his seat from the hellfire.” (Sahih Muslim, Kitab Al-Muqaddimah)

Note: Due to the situation surrounding COVID-19, tutorials will be conducted via Google Meet (online).

Hadith scholars are tasked with mastering the intricate process of identifying the origins of narrations attributed to The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, and assessing the credibility and reliability of those who have carried this divine revelation across generations of Muslims living in various lands all over the world. Textual authenticity and veracity is at the very crux of Islamic academia, and the sciences of Hadith play the protagonist in preserving the religious heritage of The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ.

Takhrij is the science of identifying and locating references and origins of Prophetic narrations, which sequentially serves as the first and most crucial step in the authentication process of the requisite religious information that forms the foundation for all religious sciences. The scholars of Takhrij developed stringent methods to clarify the legitimacy of narrations, in order to preserve the purity of religious thought and study.

Evolving in its essence throughout our academic history, Takhrij presents a dynamic gateway for all seekers of knowledge to appreciate the imperative function of Hadith authentication. From traditional encyclopaedic works to online databases, Takhrij is a must-have tool of knowledge for every student of The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ.
