Synopsis
The human race is in crisis and very few of us – if any – are able to understand what is wrong with our lives and the world at large. How did this happen and how did humans become so ‘disconnected’ with humanity? Why are psychological disorders such as depression, anxiety, fear, and suicide on the increase, and why are conventional Western therapies unable to stem the tide?
Contemplation: An Islamic Psychospiritual Study delves into the crisis facing humanity, exploring the increasing prevalence of psychological disorders like depression and anxiety. The author, Prof Malik Badri argues that conventional Western therapies fall short, emphasizing the need to explore the human spirit and spirituality.
The book encourages us to find purpose in life, being mindful human beings and finding serenity through spirituality in contemplation, reflection, and meditation, inviting readers to understand their role in creation. Prof Malik Badri contends that Islamic contemplative practices offer a path to a spiritually elevated and holistic vision of Islam, providing a timely remedy for the turbulent times. The work explores the Arabic concept of tafakkur, distinguishing it from Eastern meditation practices and highlighting its cognitive-spiritual
nature.
Through an eight-week structure, the book covers topics such as modern psychological perspectives, the works of early Muslim scholars, Islamic contemplation, and the Quran’s role in contemplating God’s creation. Ultimately, the author presents contemplation as an unrestricted form of worship with the potential for individual and collective transformation.
