Synopsis
“Certainly, will the believers have succeeded:
They, who are during their prayer humbly submissive”
– [Al-Mu’minun: 1-2]
Ibn al-Qayyim wrote, “The slave of Allah stands in front of his Lord on two occasions: the first is when he stands in his solat and the second is when he will meet Him on the Day of Judgement. Whoever fulfils the rights of the first standing, the second standing will be made easy for him. And whoever belittles, neglects and does not fulfil the rights of the first standing, the second standing will be made very difficult for him.”
The Quran and Prophetic traditions promises bountiful and abundant rewards await those who stand for prayer, with a condition stipulated: khusyu’.
There are many physical factors that might assist with khusyu’ but our scholars are quick to point that khusyu’ begins with the heart. Ibn Rajab mentioned: “The origin of khusyu’ is a delicate, calm and firm heart.”
Undoubtedly, shaytan’s attempt at disturbing those who are praying is never-ending. His whispers will emerge as soon as we start to pray and he will stick around throughout the entire prayer, doing whatever he can to divert our concentration. Therefore, we must never let him win and we must ignore his whispers from within.
Topics Covered
• Is khusyu’ obligatory?
• khusyu’ begins before takbiratul ihram
• What are you feeling and thinking in prayer?
• Obstacles to khusyu’
