Overview

“We relate to you, (O Muhammad), the best of stories in what We have revealed to you of this Quran although you were, before it, among the unaware.”
– [Surah Yusuf:3]

The beauty of this ayat is that Allah s.w.t. relates to us that He is the best in storytelling (qasas) rather than the best stories (qisas).

In other words, Allah s.w.t. not only makes ideal choices on which stories to tell, but also tells these stories in the most ideal way. And just as the ‘prologue’ of Surah Yusuf identifies the Qur’anic style of storytelling as best, its “epilogue” elaborates further with Allah’s words,

“There was certainly in their stories a lesson for those of understanding. Never was it (i.e., the Quran) a narration invented, but a confirmation of what was before it and a detailed explanation of all things and guidance and mercy for a people who believe.”
– [Surah Yusuf: 111]

Building upon this divine revelation, we learn that Allah’s method of storytelling through the Quran best serves its ultimate objective of offering ‘guidance and mercy for those who believe’, and bearing in mind that stories make up the majority of the themes in the Quran.

‘Stories of the Quran’ aspires to connect the Muslim community to the beauty of the Quran and its divine guidance through the wisdom of the stories encapsulated in it, while developing an organic progression of Quranic literacy and a comprehensible and accessible way to understand the Words of Allah.
