This session will be based on the book Recognising and Changing Destructive Behaviours by Dr Feryad A Hussain. PDF copy is available here.
Recognising and Changing Destructive Behaviours uses verses from the Quran, selected hadiths, and modern psychological theory to bring to light detrimental behaviours and guide readers in altering action through thought. Dr. Feryad A. Hussain takes ideal Islamic behaviour as a goal and presents realistic and practical advice and steps towards attaining this objective. She steers readers towards reflecting Islam in their thoughts and actions, keeping their lives in this world and the hereafter in mind.
Synopsis
“For every one (from among you) there are angels replacing one another, in front of him and behind him, who guard him under the command of Allah.
Surely, Allah does not change the condition of a people unless they change themselves.
When Allah intends evil for a people, there is no way to turn it back, and for them there is no patron other than Him.”
– [Ar-Ra’d: 11]
Real change requires drastic and to a certain extent, an immense level of effort. For the betterment of self, that effort required is primarily channeled towards abstaining from vices and personal corruption. The act of righteousness as a sign of permanent change as spiritual change is valued by how much a person can refrain from transgressions.
This is where Ramadhan is considered the impetus and catalyst for change. Will we find another opportunity to fulfil our capacity for change other than in this blessed month?
