Synopsis

The noble understanding of the matters of sincerity, repentance, patience and thankfulness, love, hope and fear, asceticism, vigilance  and self-surveillance and even remembrance of death and the afterlife stems from our interaction with the divine revelation. The soul can only be purified by the purest of sources; the wisdom of the Creator.

Unfortunately, the study of the purification of the soul has been tarnished. Instead of seeking divine intervention, the general masses turn to modern day raconteurs; the celebrities and social-media influencers, who spew egoistic personal experiences as substitutes for quranic and prophetic traditions, western profane ideologies as replacements for intellectual opinions of the righteous predecessors and unintelligible conjectures as compared to deeply rooted wisdom from the vast scholarly Islamic corpora.

We are in need of an interjection. We require rebalancing.

The hallmark of ibn Qudamah al-Maqdisi’s monumental work ‘Purification of the Soul’ is that it revolves around revelation. A holistic study based upon the sunnah of the Prophet ﷺ as he clearly states in his preface.

So whoever truly hopes for Allah and the last day should give attention in the purification of their soul, for Allah has linked the success of His servant with the purity of the soul, after making eleven consecutive oaths, There is none to be found in the Quran another structure such as this,
