Synopsis
Abdullah ibn Mughafal reported: The Messenger of Allah said, “Verily, the worst thieves among people are those who steal from their prayers.” It was said, “O Messenger of Allah, how do they steal from their prayers?”
The Prophet said, “They do not complete its bowing or prostration properly. The most miserly of people are those who are miserly with the greeting of peace.” [al-Tabrani]
When Allah obligate solat upon us in the Quran, the common phrase used is “iqamah al- Solat” which literally means to establish solat. The use of the word iqamah (which mean to ‘establish’ the prayer) is significant. The words ‘do’ or ‘perform’ solat have not been used here since it is not sufficient to complete just the outward motions. However, when you ‘establish’ solat, you complete both the inner and outer aspects of this noble worship.
The outer aspects involve carrying out its pillars, obligatory acts and prerequisites; while the inner aspects would refer to attaining the essence of salah, namely, khusyu’. These acts should be conducted in tandem with pondering on the meaning of the utterances and actions during solat.
We have been performing solat our entire lives and it is of great importance to ensure the soundness of this worship.
The soundness of our solat is not only the reason for our success in this life but more importantly in the hereafter. The Messenger of Allah said, “The first of man’s deeds for which he will be called to account on the Day of Resurrection will be Solat. If it is found to be perfect, he will be safe and successful; but if it is incomplete, he will be unfortunate and a loser.” [al-Tirmizi]
