The keen observer of the global Muslim community is well-aware that there are various ideological inclinations that are prevalent in the Muslim world today. These ideologies have developed over the course of time, and can be traced back to early Islamic history, even as early as the first century of Islam. With such diverse ideas floating around from the very dawn of our religion, the study of theology presents an entire gallery of thoughts and abstractions that fight for our attention, gathering in an intense race of the minds, seeking for nothing but the truth.

It is no secret that societal influences and political interference are key players in the emergence of the various sectarian doctrines that have been propagated over the course of Islamic intellectual history. As seekers of the truth, it is of our significant interests to understand the contexts and bases that have served as a foundation for the diverse ideas that have been formulated to provide enhanced or alternative understandings of God’s religion. That is exactly what we will be doing in this module.

We will discuss the history and the roots of the prominent theological orientations and movements, examining their various principles and doctrines, hoping to understand the reasons for their emergence and subsequent traction and attraction gained within the Muslim world.
