THE PRESERVED TRADITIONS:
TRANSMISSION & COMPILATION
OF THE SUNNAH
Overview
I used to write everything that I heard from The Messenger of Allah ﷺ and my intention was to memorize it. The Quraysh prohibited me, saying: “Do you write everything that you hear from him, while he is a human being who speaks in anger and in pleasure?” So, I stopped writing, and told The Messenger of Allah ﷺ what happened. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ signalled with his finger to his mouth and said: “Write, for by Him in whose hand is my soul, nothing comes out of it except for The Truth
– (Sunan Abi Dawud, Kitab Al-‘Ilm)
The Sunnah serves as a monumental collection of texts, contributing to the development of all the sciences of the religion, ranging from the principles of Quranic exposition and legal rulings to credal sciences and objective theories of religious ethics and philosophy. As the second undisputed source of the religion, The Sunnah is key to the preservation of the religion, both in its roots and its branches.
While traditional perspectives on The Sunnah have always leaned towards acceptance of the source, deeming it to be paramount to one’s belief, new-age criticisms raise questions on the textual reliability of the Hadith literature, leading to movements and belief systems built upon the vehement rejection of The Sunnah due to its perceived incoherence with The Quran. However, it is interesting to note that these criticisms have been debunked by contemporary scholars who have delved deep into the study of Hadith literature and its historical developments.
Let’s investigate the history of Hadith literature, and how it has been transmitted, preserved and compiled, all for the love of the Prophet ﷺ.
