THE SIX CANONS:
A PROLEGOMENA

Overview

'Abdullah ibn Mas'ud narrated that Allah’s Messenger ﷺ said: “May Allah brighten the one who hears something from us, and conveys it as he heard it. Perhaps the one it is conveyed to, is more understanding of it, than the one who heard it.” (Jami’ At-Tirmidhi, Kitab Al-'Ilm)

The divine word of God is universal and easily accessible to us, as The Quran has been compiled into a Mushaf, as we know it today. How then, are the Prophetic traditions preserved and codified, in a way that facilitates reference and study? The early scholars of Hadith collected narrations and creatively fashioned different genres of Hadith compilations that are accompanied by nuanced intentions. Most popular of them all, are The Six Canons.

Elaborating on every facet within the Islamic sciences, Prophetic narrations are an elementary feature within religious knowledge, inspiring us to think like how The Prophet ﷺ thought, and to seek the pleasure of Allah by following The Sunnah of The Prophet ﷺ. It wouldn’t be far-fetched to say that no field of study within Islam can be complete without the Hadith tradition. The Six Canons of Hadith bring us closer to the holistic understanding of Allah’s religion, by guiding us through Prophetic texts.

The formulation of The Six Canons, has made the study of Hadith so much more achievable and practical for us. So, let’s take hold of this opportunity to get closer to God, through the comprehension of the Prophetic curriculum in learning the religion.
