USUL AL-FIQH FOR THE MASSES:
INTRODUCTION TO PRINCIPLES OF LAW

Overview

'Adiyy ibn Hatim said: “Oh Messenger of Allah, what is the meaning of the white thread distinct from the black thread? Are these, two threads?” He ﷺ said: “You are not intelligent if you look for two threads.” Then, he ﷺ said: “No, it is the darkness of the night and the whiteness of the day.” (Sahih Al-Bukhari, Kitab At-Tafsir)

The art of deliberating and understanding the religion and its texts, is an intricate process of study that requires clarity of thought and consistency in methodology. A learned scholar who is sought for religious guidance and ethics, must be well-versed in the discussions and nuances of the procedure that precedes the derivation of legal rulings within the scope of Islamic law. Theoretical concepts and tools of legislation are imperative to understand the ultimate objective of the religion, for all of us.

It is known that the primary sources of the religion are, The Quran and The Sunnah. But how does one approach these two texts to understand what is expected of us as servants of God? Do we interpret and practise the religious texts as per our own deductions, or is there a codified method of thought that must be accompanied by these religious texts? Usul Al-Fiqh is the science that curates and materializes the process of deducing injunctions based on divine revelation.

Let’s take a step back to see the bigger picture behind legal rulings, so that we can appreciate the process behind thinking about God’s Law.
