Synopsis
“…It has been made permissible for you to be intimate with your wives during the nights preceding the fast. Your spouses are a garment for you as you are for them…” [Al-Baqarah: 187]
With Allah’s infinite wisdom, this amazing ayat which metaphorically depicts the spousal relationship, is placed amidst the ayahs of Ramadhan. That the relationship between husband and wife and the closeness between them does not stop even in a month when you are abstaining from relations and other needs. Rather, it only increases.
In this course, within the spirit of Ramadhan; using it as an influence to strengthen spousal and familial relationships, we will study four verses found in the Quran that serves as blueprint to provide guidance and illumination for spouses.
1. “They are clothing for you and you are clothing for them.” [al-Baqarah: 187]
This ayat provides the blueprint for the entire discussion, focusing on intimacy, comfort, protection, and mutual respect that are foundational to a loving marriage.
2. “Oh mankind, fear your Lord, who created you from one soul and created from it its mate and dispersed from both of them many men and women. And fear Allah, through whom you ask one another, and the wombs. Indeed, Allah is ever, over you, an Observer.” [an-Nisa: 1]
Understanding this verse encourages spouses to view each other as partners, complementing each other, who are journeying through life together. It emphasises that all humans are from one essence, and in the context of marriage, it reminds couples of their shared humanity, goals, and destinies.
3. “And of His signs is that He created for you from yourselves mates that you may find tranquility in them; and He placed between you affection and mercy. Indeed in that are signs for a people who give thought.” [ar-Rum: 21]
The centrality of tranquility, love, and mercy as divine signs in the creation of spouses for one another is highlighted in this ayat. It serves as a reminder that the essence of marriage is not just companionship but also the peace and contentment that comes from it.
4. “It is He who created you from one soul and created from it its mate that he might dwell in security with her. When he covers her, she carries a light burden and continues therein. And when it becomes heavy, they both invoke Allah, their Lord, ‘If You should give us a good [child], we will surely be among the grateful.’” [al-A’raf:189]
This verse helps us to reflect on the creation of life and the establishment of relationships, including the marital bond. It invites individuals to ponder the signs of God in the creation of their partners and in the concept of two souls finding solace and completion in each other. It encourages spouses to see their relationship as a continuous journey of growth, discovery, and gratitude towards the Creator.
Additionally, thus ayat speaks of the purpose of bearing child and the responsibilities that comes with it.
Join us as we reflect on the divine purpose of marriage and the uncover the Quranic guidance to a blessed marriage in the eyes of Allah.
